Origin and history

Saint Vincent de Salies-de-Béarn church, built in the late 15th century, is one of the few testimonies of French architecture from the late Middle Ages in Béarn. Its style and structure reflect a pivotal period between Gothic tradition and renaissant influences, while integrating atypical defensive elements for a place of worship.

During the Wars of Religion, the building was transformed into a citadel by Protestant and Catholic parties. A collateral building was added to the south to strengthen its defence, serving as an arsenal and a point of resistance. Fireflies in the walls allowed the besieged to defend themselves, while masonry guerrillas sheltered sentries. The whole was lined with walls independent of those of the city, with an additional west tower.

After the conflicts, the church was restored at the beginning of the seventeenth century, around 1620, when Catholic worship was resumed. The changes in this period partially erased the traces of its military use, although some defensive structures remain visible. The building, inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1925, thus retains a double memory: that of a place of prayer and a strategic bastion.

Today, Saint Vincent Church belongs to the municipality of Salies-de-Béarn. Its hybrid architecture, combining religious and military functions, makes it an emblematic monument to the troubled history of the Béarn between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The accuracy of its location is estimated as satisfactory a priori (level 6/10), and its official address is 14 Rue Saint-Vincent.
