The cross (Box XE 11): inscription by order of 25 February 1928

Origin and history

The cross of the chapel Saint Vincent de Questembert is a 17th century banner cross, located at the place called "Saint Doué", in the commune of Questembert, Morbihan (British). This monument is distinguished by its architectural structure: it has gables on its four sides, decorated with columnettes at the corners. On its large faces, it depicts two major scenes of the Christian tradition: Crucifixion and Pietà. Two statues of saints, unidentified in the sources, complete his iconography. The base of the base, molded, and the volutes in the form of capitals at the corners of the upper part testify to a careful artisanal work, characteristic of Breton religious art of that time.

The cross was listed as historic monuments by order of 25 February 1928, thereby recognizing its heritage value. It now belongs to the municipality of Questembert, as indicated by the official data of the Merimée database. Its precise location, at 24 Saint Doué, is documented, although the accuracy of its geographical location is considered "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10) according to available sources. No information is provided on its current accessibility, whether it be visits, rentals or other uses.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its importance in the landscape of Morbihan's historical monuments. The cross is part of a wider set of Breton religious heritage, marked by chapels and calvaries scattered throughout the countryside. These buildings often played a central role in community life, serving as spiritual landmarks and gathering places for residents. Their preservation, like that of the cross of Saint Vincent, allows us to understand the devotional and artistic practices of the Ancien Régime Brittany.
