Origin and history

The church of San Nicolao, located in the municipality of San-Nicolao in Upper Corsica, is a religious edifice with a rounded bedside, built between the seventeenth century and the first quarter of the nineteenth century. Its vaulted nave in cradle and its cul-de-four choir reflect a typical architecture of the Corsican Baroque era. The bell tower, surmounted by a lantern, rises at the intersection of the abside and the right side façade, while the main facade, adorned with statues of St. Nicholas and St. Peter, is crowned with a triangular pediment.

The history of the church is marked by several phases of construction and beautification. Started in the early seventeenth century, it was completed in 1717 and then reworked in 1740. The wall paintings, made in 1810 by Luigi Pollero, add a major artistic dimension to the building. Ranked a Historical Monument in 1976, the church embodies the religious and cultural heritage of Moriani's piève, a former administrative division of Corsica under Genoese influence.

San-Nicolao, the capital of the ancient Moriani piève, played a central role in the region, notably thanks to its navy of the Padulella, now the seaside resort of Moriani-Plage. This place was a strategic point for maritime exchanges and a theatre of historical events, as the boarding in 1739 of key figures of the Corsican insurrection against Genoa. The church, erected as a parish in 1790, bears witness to this turbulent history.

Inside the church consists of a nave and five richly decorated side chapels, with cariatid angels surrounding the altar. The main gate, dated 1766, and the restorations of 1896 underline the continued importance of this place of worship. The building, owned by the commune, remains a symbol of faith and local identity, linked to personalities such as Luigi Pollero, author of the frescoes, or Napoleon Bonaparte, who stayed there in 1815.
