Origin and history
The Shrine of La Salette, located in La Rabatelière, Vendée, is a religious ensemble erected in 1887 under the impulse of Abbé Hillairet, parish priest from 1873 to 1908. It was built on land offered by the Count of Poëze, owner of the local castle. This sacred site consists of three main buildings: the monument dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Salette, the rosary, and the monument to the Cross of Jerusalem. Each element reflects Marian devotion and neat architecture, integrating statues, stairs, and landscaped gardens.
The monument to Notre-Dame de la Salette, on a hillside overlooking the Petite Maine, features terraces decorated with painted cast iron statues illustrating the apparition of the Virgin in 1846. The aisles, lined with boxwood and exotic trees like palm trees, lead to a central monument with three mosaic steles. Nearby, the rosary unfolds in a grassed ramp punctuated with sixteen steles and a Pieta, while the monument to the Cross of Jerusalem, in the form of a dungeon, houses a cave depicting the Holy Sepulchre.
The sanctuary, which was listed as a historical monument in 1998, symbolizes the importance of vendean parish life at the end of the 19th century. It also includes the Chapel of the Oak, a square building backed by an old oak, housing a sanctuary dedicated to the Holy Family. These buildings, owned by the commune, bear witness to the religious influence and local traditions of the period, marked by the Vendée wars and a strong Marian devotion.
The site, open to the public, combines sacred architecture, landscaped landscapes and symbolic elements, such as the remnants of the Vendée wars, recalling the tormented history of the region. The materials used, such as painted cast iron, rock and marble, as well as mosaics, underline the care taken to make it under the direction of Abbé Hillairet.
The location of the sanctuary, near the road of Chavagnes-en-Paillers, and its precise address (5010 La Salette, 85250 La Rabatelière) make it an accessible place and anchored in the local heritage. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments in 1998 preserved this unique ensemble, reflecting both popular piety and 19th-century religious art in the Pays de la Loire.
