Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman shrine of the Bauve à Meaux is one of the most imposing and original ancient cultural ensembles of Gaul. Built at the end of the 1st or the beginning of the 2nd century AD, it is distinguished by a double quadrangular enclosure of 130 meters side, reinforced by foothills of the corner. This architectural complex, partially demolished at the end of the fourth century, probably succeeds an older sanctuary dating back to the fourth-third century B.C., attesting to a continuing religious occupation of the site.
The site illustrates the importance of Gallo-Roman cultural practices in the region, combining local and Roman influences. Its spatial organization, with monumental enclosures, suggests a major gathering place, dedicated to rituals or specific deities. The presence of an earlier sanctuary underscores the persistence of pre-Roman religious traditions, integrated and then transformed under Roman rule.
Today, the sanctuary has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1997, with a specific protection covering the remains of the site (cadastre AE 531). Owned by the commune of Meaux, it offers a rare architectural testimony of the Upper Empire in Île-de-France, although its precise location (between Rue de la Bauve and Boulevard du Mémorial Américaine) remains subject to approximations according to available sources.
