Stone road cross of the 16th century: classification by decree of 20 July 1908
Origin and history
La Croix de chemin de Sandaucourt is a historic monument located in the municipality of Sandaucourt, in the department of Vosges (88), in the Grand Est region. Dating from the 16th century, this stone cross is representative of religious monuments erected along the paths at that time, often to mark places of devotion or important crossroads. It was classified by ministerial decree on 20 July 1908, highlighting its heritage importance and legal protection.
In the 16th century, the road crosses played a central role in the lives of rural communities. They served as spiritual and geographical landmarks, often associated with local processions, prayers or gatherings. In regions such as Lorraine, these monuments also reflected the influence of the Catholic Church in the social and cultural organization of villages. Their presence marked a desire to Christianize public space and to structure movements around religious symbols.
The location of this cross, at approximately 2 Rue de la Halle in Sandaucourt, is documented in the Mérimée base, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note of 5/10). Owned by the commune, it remains a material testimony of Renaissance religious and artisanal practices in rural areas. No information is available on its sponsor, sculptor or any specific historical events related to it.
