Origin and history

The church of Saint Martial de Dirac is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Dirac, Charente (New Aquitaine). Built in the 12th century in a Romanesque style, it is distinguished by its facade adorned with two sets of superimposed arcades and a vaulted nave in a full hanger cradle. The forearm span, vaulted in dome, supports a square bell tower, while the apse adopts a cul-de-four vault. These typical architectural elements of the Poitevin novel testify to its local importance in the Middle Ages.

In the 15th century, two lateral chapels forming transept were added, partially modifying the initial structure. The building was classified as historic monuments by order of 10 February 1913, recognizing its heritage value. The property of the church today belongs to the municipality of Dirac. Its exact address, 16 Impasse de l'Église, and its Insee code (16120) confirm its anchoring in the Charente territory, formerly attached to the Poitou-Charentes region.

The Church of Saint-Martial illustrates the architectural evolution of rural churches between the 12th and 15th centuries, combining initial Romanesque elements (nef, apse) and late Gothic additions (lateral chapels). Its early ranking in 1913 underscores its role as a historical and cultural landmark in the region, although available sources do not mention sponsors or milestone events specific to its history. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), based on current data.
