Stone cross: by order of 9 June 1943

Origin and history

La Croix de Sassenage is a monument located in the municipality of Sassenage, Isère (department 38), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This stone cross has been listed as a Historic Monument since a decree of June 9, 1943. It is located in Billery driveway, although GPS coordinates suggest a nearby address at 3 Rue de la République.

The accuracy of its location is considered fair (note 5/10), and it belongs to the municipality. Crosses of this type, often erected at crossroads or near churches, served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks in villages. In Isère, as in other rural areas, they also marked places of assembly or territorial boundaries.

Their presence reflected the importance of religion in the daily life of local communities, especially before the twentieth century. These monuments, although sometimes without detailed documentation, bear witness to the social and cultural history of the territories.
