Origin and history

Saury House is a rural building built in 1802 for an affluent family in the hamlet of La Courbatière, on the town of Lavigerie (Cantal). This main house, inspired by 18th-century bourgeois canons, is distinguished by its stone facade, ionic pilasters and adorned lintel windows. It is flanked by agricultural outbuildings (dairy, sheepfold, barn, pigsty), reflecting a domestic and productive organization typical of the Auvergne countryside of the time.

Inside, the house has retained its original amenities, reflecting the rural lifestyle of the early 19th century. There are enclosed beds integrated into the structure, carved woodwork, alcoves, as well as built-in utility elements (sink, vegetable garden, bowl). The living room, decorated with stenciled panels, and the rooms with open fireplaces illustrate the concern for comfort and social representation of its occupants.

Ranked a historic monument in 2006, Saury House embodies the architectural transition between the aristocratic models of the previous century and local popular adaptations. Its exceptional state of conservation makes it a rare example of bourgeois rural heritage in Auvergne, where urban influence and peasant traditions are mixed. The protection includes all buildings (logis, barn, sheepfold, pig-house) as well as their interior decorations, highlighting the ethnographic value of the site.
