Origin and history
The château du Barrail, located in Eynesse en Gironde, is a mansion originally built in the 15th century, then enlarged in the 16th century and redesigned in the 18th century. This small building consists of a house body reinforced by three towers, one of which dates from the extension of the 16th century. A partially extinct enclosure once protected a lower yard, while outbuildings, probably aligned with its route, were demolished. The ensemble reflects an architectural evolution combining residential and defensive functions, typical of the rural manors of the era.
The castle was the subject of two protections under the Historical Monuments: the façades and roofs of the castle were inscribed by decree of 19 April 1972, followed in 1987 by a second inscription covering facades, roofs, a staircase with screws and chimneys. These measures highlight the heritage value of its medieval and classical elements. The site, although partially altered, retains traces of its original organization, with a central house and towers marking its seigneurial character.
The location of the castle, reported as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), places the monument at address 217 Cht du Barrail, 33220 Eynesse, in the department of Gironde. Attached to the commune under Insee 33160, it is part of a rural landscape where manor houses often played an administrative and agricultural centre for local seigneuries. No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, accommodation) in the sources consulted.
