Origin and history

The château du Chazepaud, also called château de Chazelpaud or du Chazepaud, is located at the place called Chazepeau, on the commune of Saint-Bard, in the department of Creuse in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. This monument is distinguished by its eclectic architecture, mixing the influences of the Loire castles while maintaining a more modest scale, close to the mansions of the 19th century. Its construction reflects a desire for social and economic prestige on the part of its sponsor, typical of the time.

The castle was built in the 1910s by Émile Chapal, an entrepreneur who developed an American subsidiary for his Crocq-based company. This project is part of a broader Chapal project, which also built the Château du Rocher in La Villeneuve during the same period. These achievements illustrate his ambition to mark his industrial success by imposing residences, symbols of his success.

Today, the Château du Chazepaud has changed its vocation: since 2019, it houses a restaurant and a guest house. This reconversion reflects the adaptation of private heritage to contemporary needs, while preserving its historical character. The site remains a notable example of regional neo-renaissance architecture, although its size and original use bring it closer to a bourgeois mansion than to a feudal castle.
