Origin and history

Chiloup Castle, located in Dagneux in the department of Ain, has its origins in the fourteenth century. Built around 1330 as a strong house at the initiative of Guichard de Chiloup, it was then linked to the seigneury of Montluel. The building reflected the defensive and residential needs of the late medieval era, while marking the local influence of its founding family.

Over the centuries, the castle has lost its strictly defensive character to become a more bourgeois home. He changed hands several times, notably to the Decrees de Sainte-Croix families, and then to the Monsterot in the 19th century, the latter also owned in Balan. These transitions illustrate the social and architectural evolution of the building, adapted to the tastes and needs of its successive owners.

Today, Chiloup Castle belongs to the town hall of Dagneux and serves as a framework for ceremonies related to the medical regiment of the Valbonne camp. It is also an emblematic place of the Festival Contes en Côteière, highlighting its anchoring in local cultural and community life. Its history thus reflects both architectural heritage and continuity of use, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.
