Origin and history

Château Cocu is a historic monument located in the commune of Auzat-la-Combelle, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 13th century, it now appears in the form of imposing ruins, marked by cylindrical towers and vestiges of a wall of enclosure. These ruins bear witness to a prolonged occupation, the last known resident dating back to 1840, suggesting a relatively recent deterioration of the structure.

The castle was listed as historic monuments by order of 17 July 1926, thus recognizing its heritage value. Private property, it is not accessible to the public, but its medieval architecture, especially its walls once covered in crepe according to historian Nicolas Mengus, offers an overview of the construction techniques of the period. Available sources, such as the Merimée or Monumentum base, confirm its local importance and its current state of partial conservation.

The precise coordinates of the castle, located at the approximate address 1 Rue du Château Cocu, place the site in a rural setting marked by the feudal history of the region. Although little documented about its occupants or its exact role in the Middle Ages, the Cescu castle illustrates the defensive and seigneurial network that then structured the Auvergnat territory. Its inscription among the historical monuments of Puy-de-Dôme makes it a silent but protected witness to the past.
