Origin and history

The château d'Aubonne, also known as château de Marguier, is an 18th-century building located in the commune of Aubonne, in the Doubs department, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It was built in 1760 on land acquired in 1706 by the Marguier family, at the initiative of Antoine Marguier d'Aubonne. The castle is located in the southern part of the village, close to Buhin Creek, in a valley.

In 1830, a fire partially damaged the castle, leading to expansion and the addition of a chapel. These transformations marked the beginning of the 19th century for the monument. The castle was listed as a historical monument on 17 August 1979, protecting its facades, roofs, interior staircase, kitchen, decorated room, as well as the communes and former stables.

Today, Aubonne Castle is an architectural testimony of the 18th and 19th centuries, mixing classical style and post-fire adaptations. Its inscription as a historic monument underscores its heritage importance in the region, while preserving remarkable interior and exterior elements, such as the baluster staircase or the decorations of the main rooms.
