Origin and history
The Château de La Ventrouze, located in the eponymous commune of the Orne department in Normandy, dates from the 16th century. It is a typical example of the seigneurial architecture of the Renaissance, although its present state reflects subsequent transformations. From the original feudal building, there are only remains, including two round towers surrounding the original access protected by a drawbridge, now replaced by a stone bridge. These towers are extended by buildings of dependence, while the main house, divided into three parts, partially retains its initial volume. The facades combine pink bricks on the lower floor and a checker of ochre and brown bricks on the upper floor, with frames of limestone windows.
The castle is surrounded by large moat, partially filled, which emphasize its initial defensive character. Historic monuments since 1979 include facades, roofs, four remarkable chimneys, and moat. The commune of La Ventrouze, crossed by streams like the Motte Creek, is part of a rural landscape marked by the Perche State Forest, a natural region to which it belongs. The local climate, of an altered oceanic type, and the occupation of land, mostly forest, have shaped a preserved environmental framework, where the castle integrates as a testimony of Norman seigneurial history.
Armand-Louis de Sérent (1736-1822), military and politician of the 18th and 19th centuries, is a notable figure linked to La Ventrouze, bearing the title of seigneur of the place. This character illustrates the social and political role of the chestnuts in the region, often associated with land management and local government. The castle, inscribed in the heritage, thus embodies both a characteristic architecture of its era and a heritage linked to the Percheron aristocracy, in a territory today marked by a low population density and a rural economy.
