Origin and history
The Château Laroque, located in Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes en Gironde, is a historical monument dating back to the seventeenth century. Although rebuilt in the 18th century, it preserves older architectural elements, including a medieval tower and moats, testimonies of its defensive past. These remains suggest an occupation and fortification of the site well before its reconstruction.
The castle was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 10 February 2016. This protection covers the entire body of houses, communes, cellars (excluding modern buildings and swimming pool), as well as the park and associated mills. These protected elements reflect the heritage importance of the site, both for its architecture and for its integration into a wider domain.
Today, Laroque Castle is a private property, managed by a company. Its current use potentially includes activities such as room rental or bed and breakfast accommodation, although this information is not explicitly confirmed by available sources. The location of the castle, noted as approximate with an accuracy considered fair (level 5/10), remains a point to be refined for visitors.
The region of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, in Gironde, is marked by a strong wine and agricultural history, typical of New Aquitaine. Castles and estates in this area have often played a central role in the local economy, serving as places of production, storage (such as the cellars mentioned for Laroque) and residence for landowners. The Laroque castle is part of this context, where architecture blends with practical functions related to the exploitation of the terroir.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum database, highlight the importance of preserving this heritage, while noting limitations in the accuracy of detailed geographic or historical data. The approximate address, " 231 Laroque", and the Insee code of the municipality (33384) allow however to situate the monument in the department of Gironde, near Bordeaux.
