Origin and history

The Château Thévenot is an emblematic building located in Audincourt, in the Doubs department, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the second half of the 18th century, it reflects the characteristic architecture of this period for the Montbéliard region. Its facades, roofs and the chimney of two rooms of the floor have been protected as historical monuments since 1984.

Originally, the castle was built for the Thévenot family, influential landowners in the area. In the 19th century, a building was added in the courtyard to accommodate a gendarmerie, marking a change in its use. Subsequently, the estate became the property of the Peugeot family, before being transformed into a municipal library, a function which it still occupies today.

Located on the edge of the Doubs, the castle combines a preserved architectural heritage with a contemporary public utility. Its inscription in historical monuments underlines its cultural importance and its anchoring in local history, while at the same time testifying to the social and economic transformations of the region, particularly with its link to the Peugeot industry.

The protected elements specifically include facades, roofs and a chimney, according to the 1984 Registration Order. Today owned by the municipality of Audincourt, the castle remains an accessible place, although its exact status (visits, events) is not detailed in the available sources.
