Origin and history

The Château de Moulin-Neuf, located on horseback in the communes of Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie and Saint-Siffret (Gard), finds its origins in the Middle Ages with a mill certified in the 16th century. The estate, with an area of 22 hectares at the time, passed into the hands of the Bargeton family in the mid-17th century, by inheritance via Marie de la Bastide, widow of Louis de Vaux, seigneur of Saint-Quentin. The de Vaux, enriched by cattle rearing and the leather trade, gave the estate in 1752 to Jacques Adhémar Gaspard d'Arnaud de Vallabrix, by his marriage with Jeanne Marguerite de Bargeton.

In the 18th century, the castle became the property of Jean François Gaspard of Arnaud de Vallabrix (1755–?), a military who became sub-prefect and then mayor of Uzès under the Empire. Veuf, his property, including the Moulin-Neuf, passed by alliance to the family of La Rochette. The estate, which includes a house, commons, two orangeries and a landscaped park built in the 19th century, reflects the neo-classical factories of that time. Its facades, roofs, mill and park have been listed as historical monuments since September 25, 2007.

The architecture of the castle is organised around a central courtyard, with communes in the north and a house in the south, complemented by landscape elements such as orangeries. The site, now private property, bears witness to the evolution of a medieval mill in seigneurial residence, then in aristocratic domain in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments highlights its heritage interest, combining industrial (moulin) and architectural (neo-classicism).
