Château-fort (vestiges de l'Ancienne) (Case AC 506, 509) : classification by order of 22 August 1980

Origin and history

The Château-fort d'Orgelet, located in the municipality of the same name in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, was built between the 4th quarter of the 13th century and the 1st quarter of the 14th century. This monument, now partially in ruins, illustrates the medieval military architecture of the region. Its remains, protected by a classification as Historic Monuments since 1980, include elements of the former fortress, located on cadastral plots AC 506 and 509.

The location of the castle, in the heart of Orgelet (the Jura department), reflects its strategic role in defending or controlling the territory during the feudal period. The accuracy of its location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), allows to identify its approximate address at 23 Rue du Château. Owned by the municipality, the site raises questions about its current accessibility, whether it be visits, space rentals or tourist accommodation.

At the time of its construction, between the 13th and 14th centuries, Franche-Comté was marked by a feudal organization where castles played a central role. These buildings served as both seigneurial residences, administrative centres and defence points against local or regional conflicts. Their presence strengthened the power of the lords while structuring the economic and social life of the surrounding populations, often linked to agriculture, handicrafts or local commerce.
