Origin and history

The castle of Pradines, located in Grambois in the Vaucluse, finds its origins in the eighteenth century with an initial nucleus, before being profoundly transformed in the nineteenth century. At that time, it became the heart of a vast rural estate, structured around a central castle, outbuildings organized in courtyards, and a landscape park adorned with groves, fountains, ponds, and a rose garden. A vineyard completes this set, reflecting the agricultural and aesthetic importance of the place for its owners.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the castle was enriched by the addition of a theatre and architectural elements from the church of Notre-Dame-des-Amandiers de La Bastide-des-Jourdans. The painted decorations of the theatre portal and a large salon, made by the artists Riou and Marchand, bear witness to this period of artistic refinement. In the 1930s, landscape architect Jacques Couëlle recomposed the southern parterre, marking a last notable development of the estate.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 2007, the castle of Pradines today protects all its estate, including the castle, the theatre, outbuildings, the park with its built and vegetal elements, as well as the winery. This classification highlights the heritage value of a combination of rural history, architecture and art, embodied by figures such as architects Vaucher and Bodin, and painters Riou and Marchand.
