Origin and history

Quintin Castle is a unique historical monument, composed of two separate buildings: a 17th century castle, classified since 1983, and another 18th century, unfinished and inscribed in 2021. These two buildings, surrounded by a park, are located in the heart of the medieval city of Quintin, Brittany. The 17th century castle, which remained unfinished, suffered damage during the wars of the 15th and 16th centuries, while the 18th century castle was renovated from the existing commons and stables.

The seigneury of Quintin, erected as a duchy in 1691, belonged to prestigious families such as the Rohan, Laval, Coligny, La Tremeille, and more recently the Frotier de Bagneux since 1935. The latter undertook important restorations, including French-style gardens, 18th-century salons, and former stables. The 17th century castle, uninhabited for decades, has been the subject of a major restoration programme since 2013, partly financed by the state and the Brittany region.

The 17th century castle features a quadrilateral architecture flanked by hilly pavilions, with massive basements and inclined walls. A dendrochronological study dated the woods of the main pavilion between 1658 and 1660. The 18th century castle, in continuity with previous buildings, houses furnished apartments, historic kitchens, and collections of art objects. In 2021, Stéphane Bern's heritage mission allocated €271,000 to restore the Archives Tower and part of the ramparts.

Open to the public since 1986, the castle offers guided tours of its gardens, salons, and permanent exhibitions. Annual events, such as Christmas in Brittany, host the estate with crèches exhibitions, candlelight tours, and workshops. The site remains a living testimony of Breton feudal and aristocratic history, preserved by the same lineage since the 13th century.
