Origin and history

The castle of Saint-Avent, mentioned in 1266, was completely rebuilt in the early seventeenth century, including its house and two corner towers. Its pentagon plane, organized around a central courtyard, includes a two-winged house body forming an open angle. This major overhaul reflects the defensive needs of the era, marked by the wars of the late 16th century, as evidenced by the oval cannons of the south tower.

In the years 1720-1750, the castle underwent important works, including the addition of a new gallery in 1759 to serve the rooms on the first floor of the east wing. The interior decor, sober, is mainly limited to murals of wooded fireplace, covering various styles, from Louis XIII to Napoleon III. The southern outbuildings, less transformed, retain original elements such as a central entrance pavilion or ground support windows, illustrating the architectural evolution of the site.

Ranked Historic Monument in 2001, the castle includes in its protection buildings, fence walls, and the soil of the corresponding plot (cadastre AB 158). Today owned by a private company, its present state combines 16th century defensive heritage and 17th and 18th century residential developments, typical of the noble homes of the region.
