Origin and history
At the end of the 19th century, Valenciennes had one of the most advanced water distribution networks in France. However, with the rapid development of the suburbs between 1890 and 1893, the municipality had to face increasing challenges in supplying these new neighbourhoods with drinking water. The need for a more efficient system became evident, leading to major infrastructure projects in the early twentieth century.
In 1906, the city decided to build two new reservoirs, including that of Place Verte. This project was entrusted to architect Paul Dusart and engineer E. Malaquin. The objective was twofold: to increase the storage capacity and improve the pressure in the pipelines to serve the highest areas of Valenciennes, as well as the old poorly supplied areas. The work was completed in 1908, marking a significant advance for the local water system.
The Château d'eau de la Place Verte was listed as a Historic Monument by decree of 22 March 2012, notably for its facades, roofs, as well as the pump building and adjoining workshops. This ranking recognizes its heritage and technical importance, while emphasizing its role in the urban history of Valenciennes. Today, it reflects innovations in hydraulics at the beginning of the 20th century.
