Origin and history

Beaujeu Castle is a medieval building located in the commune of Beaujeu-Saint-Vallier-Pierrejux-et-Quitteur, Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. It is distinguished by its Romanesque dungeon, dated the twelfth century, which is the only remaining standing vestige of the former fortress of the lords of Beaujeu. This monument bears witness to the defensive architecture of the feudal era in this region.

The castle was listed as historical monuments on 29 November 1977, a recognition that protects its facades and roofs from the dungeon. Although the information on its detailed history is limited, its inscription underlines its heritage importance. The site is located precisely at 5 Rue Haute, in a rural setting characteristic of Haute-Saône.

In the historical context of Franche-Comté, castles like Beaujeu played a central role in the territorial organisation and protection of local populations. They served as checkpoints for the lords, while symbolizing their power over the surrounding lands. The region, marked by a rural economy and limited trade, saw these fortifications as key elements of stability and defence.
