Origin and history

Charbonnel Castle, also known as the central castle or La Bastide du Soleil because of its current hospitality vocation, is an emblematic monument of the municipality of Vinezac. Located in the department of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (formerly Rhône-Alpes), it occupies a central place in the village, in lower Cevenne ardèche Sud. Its architecture and history are closely linked to those of the local seigneurial families, whose heraldic traces it still bears.

The castle belonged to the Charbonnel de Chauzon family, coseigneurs de Vinezac, allied to other noble lines of the region such as the La Motte and the Servissas. These alliances are symbolized by the arms of the Charbonnel and La Motte, as well as the deer of the Servissas, visible near the entrance. The building, threatened with ruin, was bought and completely restored by the municipality to become a prestigious hotel-restaurant. This restoration has preserved remarkable architectural elements, such as the sill windows and a monumental sandstone staircase.

On the architectural plane, the castle of Charbonnel is distinguished by its sill windows, typical of seigneurial constructions, and its interior staircase in sandstone, reflecting a certain fascist. Although its exact period of construction is not specified in the sources, its style and history relate to the feudal and seigneurial dynamics of the Ardèche. Today, it combines historical heritage and contemporary use, embodying both the medieval past of the region and its current tourist attraction.
