Origin and history
The Château de Chitré, located in Vouneuil-sur-Vienne in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, is a building whose origins date back to the 16th century, with major transformations carried out in the 4th quarter of the 19th century. This monument illustrates a superimposition of architectural styles, mixing medieval elements like the dungeon with more recent additions. The facades and roofs of the castle, as well as those of the adjacent dungeon, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 30 September 1988, while the chimney of the hunting hall, dated the sixteenth century, was ranked on 1 March 1990 for its exceptional heritage value.
The design of the castle is partly attributed to Abbé Brisécier, mentioned as an architect or masterpiece in the available sources. The site preserves traces of its past use, including the hunting hall and its decor, testifying to its residential and social role throughout the centuries. Today, although information on its accessibility (visits, rentals, accommodation) is not specified in the archives consulted, its location is documented with a precision deemed "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), facilitating its identification in the communal territory.
Chitré Castle is part of a historical landscape marked by Vienna, a department on which it depends (code Insee 86298), and the Poitou-Charentes region, which is now part of New Aquitaine. Its state of conservation and the legal protections it enjoys underline its importance in the local heritage, although the details of its contemporary use or interior arrangements remain partial in the current sources.
