Origin and history
Ledenon Castle is a medieval castle located in the commune of the same name, in the Gard department, in the Occitan region. Its origins date back to at least the 12th century, with significant modifications and additions in the 13th, 15th and 18th centuries. This monument thus illustrates several periods of construction, mixing defensive and residential elements characteristic of each period.
The castle preserves significant architectural traces, such as a vaulted hall of 13th century warheads, pierced with third-point and archer doors, as well as an iconic dungeon. The east facade, adorned with geminied bays and steeples, has been restored identically. The lower parts to the north and east of the inner courtyard probably date from the late 13th century, while the upper parts to the south and west seem to be earlier. A notable feature is the use of blocks from the Roman waterworks of Nîmes to build part of the walls of the early fortified gate.
Near the entrance to the basement is the remains of a medieval press, probably used for oil or wine production, reflecting local economic activities. The castle was listed as historic monuments by order of 6 December 1990, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Protected elements include the remains of the castle, the ramparts, and the surrounding ground.
The site, although partially open to the visit, maintains a precise location at 11 Panoramic Street, 30210 Lédenon. Its Insee code (30145) is administratively linked to the Nîmes district. The accuracy of its geographical location is considered satisfactory, facilitating its access and study.
