Origin and history

The Château de Peyrudette is a medieval building located at the place Peyrudettes, on the commune of Champagnat, in the Creuse department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built at the end of the 15th century, it bears the mark of this time with a lintel dated 1480, attesting to its late origin in the Middle Ages. This castle, still privately owned, is not accessible to the public, thus preserving its historical privacy.

The monument was partially listed as the Historic Monuments on 2 January 1989. This protection specifically concerns its facades, roofs, as well as remarkable interior elements such as the dining room and woodwork, or the fireplace of the living room. A fountain, probably linked to the layout of the estate, is also included in this inscription. These architectural and decorative details reflect the prestige of a seigneurial residence of the nascent Renaissance.

Located in a rural department like Creuse, the castle of Peyrudette is part of a landscape marked by feudal and post-feudal constructions. At the end of the 15th century, this region, then integrated into the Duchy of Aquitaine, saw coexist local lords and a peasantry organized around agriculture and livestock. The castles of that time served both as aristocratic residences and as symbols of power in a often disputed territory.

Today, the castle of Peyrudette remains a silent testimony of this story, without its owners or past occupants being documented in the available sources. Its inscription in the Historic Monuments nevertheless underlines its heritage importance, while keeping it away from the tourist circuits, unlike other castles in the region open to the public.
