Origin and history

Pisany Castle is an ancient medieval fortress probably built in the 13th century on the site of an older feudal motte. Located near the Place des Halles in Pisany (Charente-Maritime), it was for centuries a strategic place controlled by the Raban family, mentioned in 1270 in charters. Its defensive role and its local importance made it a key monument of the region, before being modernized from the 15th century by new owners, marking its evolution towards a seigneurial residence.

In the 15th century, the castle passed into the hands of Arnauld de Tourettes, president of the Parliament of Bordeaux, who undertook modernization work. At his death he bequeathed the property to his nephew Arthus de Vivonne, whose son, Jean de Vivonne, became Marquis de Pisany in 1586. The latter, Sénéchal de Saintonge and Ambassador of France, strengthens the town's defences and transforms the castle, reflecting its political prestige. The monument remains associated with influential figures, such as her daughter Catherine de Vivonne, Marquise de Rambouillet, and her granddaughter Julie d'Angennes, Duchess of Montausier, both women of prominent 17th century letters.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the castle changed hands several times and suffered the outrages of time. Damaged by a storm in 1784, then during the Revolution, it was sold as a national good and fell partially in ruins for lack of maintenance. Its current architecture, although redesigned, preserves medieval elements (body of buildings with foothills, door windows) and traces of 17th century reconstructions. The vestiges of the enclosure wall and the entrance pavilion, formerly equipped with a drawbridge, recall its feudal fortress past.

Today, the castle of Pisany embodies both the military heritage of the Middle Ages and the transformations related to the social ascent of its owners. Although stripped of his chapel Saint-Barbe (destroyed during the wars of religion and rebuilt in 1657 before disappearing), it remains a symbol of the Charentais heritage, marked by conflicts, family alliances and architectural developments over nearly five centuries.
