Origin and history

The Château de Sévignac is an iconic monument located in the commune of Sévignacq-Meyracq, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its origins date back to the first quarter of the 17th century, during which time it was probably built as a seigneurial residence or fort house, reflecting the civil architecture of the period in this region of the Pyrenees. Architectural traces and internal sources also indicate major changes during the 19th century, suggesting an adaptation to the lifestyles and needs of the owners of this period.

In the historical context of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, 17th century castles and fortified houses often served as administrative and social centres for local lords. They embodied both economic power, linked to the exploitation of land and resources, and symbolic status in rural communities. In the 19th century, the modifications made to these buildings often reflected the evolution of aesthetic tastes, with additions of comfort or redevelopments inspired by romantic or neoclassical currents.

These changes could also respond to changes in land organization or to the development of new regional economic activities.
