Origin and history

The castle of Wasigny is a 17th century fort house, transformed into a farm, located below the road leading to La Neuville-lès-Wasigny, along the river Vaux. The building preserves traces of its defensive past, including a 16th century corner tower with brazed cannons. Its entrance, marked by a carriageway surmounted by a "at the Philibert Delorme" peak and framed by two dissymmetric pavilions, bears witness to its architectural importance. The brick facades, animated by harped stone chains and curved lintel windows, reflect the styles of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The castle was mentioned in the Albums of Croÿ before its partial destruction in 1617 by the royal troops of the Duke of Guise and the Marquis of Themines, at the end of the regency of Mary of Medici. Reconstructed by the Villelongue family after its takeover in 1685, he passed into the hands of several influential owners, including the Rouillé de Fontaine. In 1794, during the Revolution, Alexandre Rouillé de Fontaine was forced to demolish two towers and partially close the ditches to reduce his defensive character. The estate, which remained in this family until 1911, was listed as historical monuments in 1946.

Associated with personalities such as Les Thémines, Villelongue, or Caulet d'Hauteville, the castle illustrates the evolution of seigneurial residences in Ardennes. Pierre-Denis Caulet de Wasigny, Grand Master of the Waters and Forests of Picardie, was the last notable owner before the Revolution. Its history reflects the political and architectural upheavals of the 17th and 18th centuries, between defensive function, aristocratic residence and adaptation to revolutionary constraints.

The site, traversed by the GR 12 and GR 654 hiking trails, has maintained protected features since 1946, including the entrance porch and the main building. Its strategic location, at the northern exit of Wasigny, and its proximity to the River de la Vaux make it a remarkable testimony to the Ardennes heritage, mixing military history, classical architecture and rural life.
