Origin and history

Chevillon Castle is an emblematic building located in the Yonne department, in the commune of Chevillon, now attached to Charny Orée de Puisaye. Built mainly in the 15th and 17th centuries, it embodies the architectural evolutions of these periods, mixing medieval defensive elements and more recent developments. Its features include moat, a sleeping bridge, as well as remains of a drawbridge, typical of the castles of this time in Burgundy.

The monument has been included in the inventory of Historic Monuments since November 6, 1985. This protection concerns not only the main body of the castle, but also related elements such as the dovecote, part of the commons, a 17th century poternode, and the fence walls. A local tradition, although not confirmed by solid historical sources, evokes a passage of Joan of Arc in this castle for one night. This anecdote, often repeated, remains, however, subject to bail in the absence of tangible evidence.

Chevillon Castle is part of a territory marked by feudal history and the conflicts of the Hundred Years War. At that time, Burgundian castles served as both seigneurial residences and strategic points for controlling roads and agricultural lands. Their architecture often reflected defence needs, while gradually integrating comfort elements related to the changing lifestyles of local elites.

Today, the castle is located at the approximate address of 11 Rue du Château, in the commune of Charny Orée de Puisaye. Its state of conservation and its openness to the public are not specified in the available sources, but its listing as historical monuments makes it a protected and potentially accessible heritage for visits or cultural events.
