Origin and history

Toulouse's municipal greenhouses are part of the technical development of greenhouses in the 19th century, made possible by progress in iron and glass control. These constructions, which appeared at the end of the 18th century, became widespread after geographical discoveries and industrial advances. In Toulouse, their construction took place in two phases: a first in 1877 with a rotunda designed by Pommard, followed in 1893 by two wings added by Tartux, one perpendicular to the rotunda and the other ending with hemicycles.

The ensemble, originally installed in the Jardin des Plantes, is dismantled and rebuilt in the early twentieth century in the flower garden. The greenhouses, with double exposure and protected by blinds, illustrate the utilitarian and innovative architecture of the period. Their botanical vocation reflects the importance attached to natural sciences and horticulture in the rapidly expanding French cities.

Classified as a Historical Monument in 1987, these greenhouses are now owned by the commune of Toulouse. Their design, combining functionality and aesthetics, reflects the technical know-how of the late 19th century, while meeting the growing conservation and exposure needs of exotic or local plants. Their current location, Boulevard de la Marne, makes it an integral part of the Toulouse urban landscape.
