Origin and history
The set of defensive habitats of the Lucs-sur-Boulogne, located in Vendée (Pays de la Loire), dates from the Middle Ages. This site features characteristic elements of medieval military architecture: a rampart of land with its ditch, three feudal mottes, and the ruins of an ancient castle. These structures illustrate local defence techniques and the seigneurial organization of the time.
The monument was partially protected by an order of 2 June 1988, covering specifically the rampart, mottes and remains of the castle. The property is now shared between private actors, the department, and an association. Although the sources mention an approximate location (precision noted as "passable"), the official address referenced in the Merimée database confirms its anchoring in the commune of Lucs-sur-Boulogne (code Insee 85129).
Medieval defensive habitats, such as the Lucs-sur-Boulogne, reflect a period when local lords fortified their lands to protect themselves from conflicts or raids. They also served as administrative and economic centres for the surrounding rural populations. Their preservation offers a material testimony to the social and military dynamics of the Vendée in the Middle Ages.
