Origin and history
The Grand Poillé, located in Contest in the Pays de la Loire, is a remarkable medieval architectural ensemble, combining defensive and judicial elements. It consists of a feudal motte, vestige of an ancient fortification, and a justice audience built at the end of the 14th century. These structures are integrated into a seigneurial home built in the late 15th century, illustrating the evolution of the residential and administrative needs of the time. The motte still retains its water ditch, a rare testimony of medieval defensive architecture.
It also includes the remains of a tithe barn, destroyed by a fire in 1950, which recalls the economic and agricultural importance of the site. The audience of justice, attached to the seigneurial house, emphasizes the central role of this place in the local administration. The site was partially protected by orders in 1994 and 1996, recognizing its heritage value. These protections include the mot, the audience, the house, the old pond and its archaeological plate.
The Grand Poillé is a typical example of the seigneurial ensembles of the late Middle Ages, where residential, judicial and economic functions are mixed. Its state of conservation, though partial, makes it possible to understand the spatial and social organization of the local lords. The location of the site, in the municipality of Contest (Department of Mayenne), makes it a key element of the heritage of the Pays de la Loire, reflecting the historical dynamics of this region during the 14th and 15th centuries.
