Origin and history
The Farm of the Forest, located in Courtes in the department of Ain, is an old farm typical of the Bresse, built between the second half of the seventeenth century and the first half of the eighteenth century. This building, representative of the rural architecture of Bressane, is distinguished by its outdoor balcony gallery and its wooden and torchi sarrasine fireplace, characteristic elements of local farms. It has been listed as a historical monument since 1930 and illustrates the region's agricultural heritage.
Transformed into a museum in 1971, the Farm of the Forest now exhibits collections of tools and brassan furniture, offering a concrete testimony to the rural life of the past. The pyramidal mitre of the roof, restored in 1935, and the buckwheat fireplace are among the elements protected by the classification. The site also served as the starting point for the 2nd stage of the Tour de l'Ain in 2013, highlighting its roots in contemporary local life.
The farm is part of the cultural landscape of the Bresse, a natural region known for its rural architectural heritage. Its ranking includes the entire building and its chimney, reflecting the importance attached to preserving this type of construction. The creation of the museum has made it possible to enhance this heritage while making it accessible to the public, contributing to the transmission of the memory of traditional agricultural techniques.
