Origin and history
The former townhouse of Nerac, destroyed in 1611 by the explosion of a powder reserve, was immediately rebuilt. This new building incorporated medieval vestiges of the thirteenth century, the last testimonies of the original building linked to the first franchises granted to the city by the lords of Albret. These privileges marked the growing autonomy of Nerac, then under the influence of this powerful family.
The reconstruction of 1611, carried out in a Calvinist context, adopted an ornamental style characteristic of the early seventeenth century, visible notably on the main door. The building became the headquarters of the city's management institutions, reflecting its central role in local government. Its architecture thus combines medieval heritage with classical influences, symbolizing a pivotal period in urban history.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 2008, the former mayory is now owned by the municipality. Its listing in the inventory protects the entire building (Cadastre AC 988), emphasizing its heritage importance. Although its exact location (6 School Street) is documented, its accessibility to the public (visits, events) is not specified in available sources.
