Origin and history
The church of Saint-Antoine de Thilouze finds its origins in a primitive construction dating back to the 9th or 10th century, of which today only remains the bedside wall of the choir, characterized by a small apparatus. This vestige testifies to the first Christian foundations in the region, although few material elements of that time survived subsequent changes.
In the 12th century, the nave was entirely rebuilt in a Romanesque style, marking a major development phase of the building. This nave, now covered with a modern panelled frame, ends with a vaulted square choir on a cross-dogives, typical of the religious architecture of the time. The bell tower, also dated from this period, presents a vaulted room on the ground floor, adorned with moulded crossovers and sculpted caps of human figures, illustrating the know-how of medieval artisans.
The 16th century saw major changes with the addition of a northern collateral, doubling the original nave. This lower side communicates with the nave by three arches in broken arch and ends with a lateral chapel next to the choir. The spans of the collateral are vaulted with dogive crosses, whose armored keys, now staked, suggest a noble origin or local alliances. The bell tower was also redesigned during this period, with a partial reconstruction of its upper part, reflecting the stylistic evolutions of the Renaissance.
The church, classified as a Historical Monument since 1959 for its bell tower, thus embodies almost seven centuries of architectural history, mixing Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance influences. Its present structure is the result of these successive strata, each bearing the traces of the liturgical techniques and needs of its time.
