Origin and history
The Saint-Pierre de Cerny church, located in the Essonne department in Île-de-France, is a Catholic religious building whose origins date back to at least the twelfth century, as evidenced by a charter of that time. The present building was mainly built under the impetus of Blanche de Castille in the 13th century, before undergoing major changes after the Wars of Religion (16th century). Work continued in the 17th and 19th centuries, especially for the nave, porch and bell tower, reflecting architectural developments and restoration needs.
The church, listed as a historical monument since 10 February 1948, preserves a rich furniture heritage: seventeenth-century paintings, an 18th-century lutrin, a 19th-century high altar, as well as stained glass windows and furniture mostly dated from the 19th century. These elements illustrate his continued role as a place of worship and community gathering. In 2025, the Cardinal's Buildings Association helped finance the renovation of its roof and parish hall, amounting to 40,000 euros out of a total budget of 45,000 euros.
Architecturally, St Peter's Church embodies stylistic transitions between the Middle Ages and modern times, with additions and restorations responding to historical hazards. Its inscription as a historic monument underscores its heritage value, both for its building and for its furniture. The location of Cerny, in the Parc naturel régional du Gâtinais français, reinforces its anchoring in a territory marked by a preserved religious and rural heritage.
