Origin and history

Saint-Pierre de Mayrègne Church is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Mayrègne, in the Haute-Garonne region of Occitanie. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, it embodies Pyrenean Romanesque architecture, with a rectangular plan extended by a semicircular apse. Its square tower tower, with a four-sided roof, dominates the west of the building, while a rectangular sacristy adds to the northeast. Re-use carved stones, integrated into the facades, attest to the ancient Gallo-Roman altars in the valley, highlighting the cultural continuity of the site.

The interior is characterized by a cradle vault covering four spans, extended by the cul-de-four de l'Abside. The windows, pierced in large decorative arches, illustrate the southern Romanesque style. The adjacent cemetery houses a monumental cross, which has been classified since 1926, strengthening the heritage importance of the site. The church, a communal property, was listed as historical monuments on 1 August 1975 for its architectural and historical interest.

The Gallo-Roman remains re-used in the masonry suggest that Mayrègne, located in the Oueil valley, was a place of worship long before the Middle Ages. This reuse of ancient materials, common in rural areas, bears witness to medieval constructive practices while preserving the memory of past times. The building, still in place in the heart of the village, remains an identity marker of the local community, linked to both the Christian faith and the long history of the valley.
