Origin and history

The church of Saint-Vincent de Hermes, located in the department of Oise in the Hauts-de-France region, is a religious building whose nave dates back in part to the 11th century, as evidenced by the apparatus in small cubic stones of the southern wall. This monument has undergone many transformations over the centuries, including the addition of a flamboyant gothic lowside north of the nave and the partial reconstruction of its 19th century gates and windows. The church was particularly famous for its two-storey belfry Romanesque bell tower, built on unstable ground and taken up as a sub-work in the 16th century, but which collapsed in 1919, causing the destruction of the first span of the choir and the northern side chapel. This event deeply marked the history of the building, leading to the construction of a modern bell tower in 1927.

The apse and southern side chapel, built in the second quarter of the 16th century, illustrate the transition between the flamboyant Gothic style and the Renaissance. These parts, spared by the collapse of the bell tower, are characterized by arches of warheads and neat decorations, reflecting a period of architectural prosperity. The church was listed as historical monuments in 1927, recognizing its heritage value despite the mutilations suffered over the centuries. The nave, for its part, lost part of its authenticity with the installation of a ceiling with caissons in 1722 and subsequent restorations.

The history of the parish of Hermes dates back to ancient times, with a place of worship probably dedicated to Mercury. The village, one of the oldest in Beauvais, experienced a boom linked to the presence of a bridge over the Thérain, protected by a fortress between the 12th and 15th centuries. The church, dedicated to Saint Vincent de Zaragoza and Saint Germain, was under the Old Regime attached to the diocese of Beauvais. It survived repeated floods of Therain and conflicts, such as the Hundred Years' War, which left traces in its architecture.

The church furniture includes several classified elements, including the 16th century baptismal fonts, two ancient ionic capitals re-used in the bell tower piles, and a glass window of the Crucifixion of Christ dating from the mid-16th century. These objects bear witness to the historical and artistic richness of the building. Despite the destruction and reconstruction, Saint Vincent Church remains a remarkable example of the architectural and religious evolution in the region.

The church is now affiliated with the parish of Saint-Yves-d'Auteuil in the country of Noailles, which comprises 23 communes. Early Sunday Masses are usually celebrated on the first Saturday of the month. The building, although marked by the vicissitudes of history, continues to play a central role in local religious and community life.
