Origin and history

The archaeological site of Saint-Genes, located in Castelferrus in the Tarn-et-Garonne, is a monumental complex covering several key periods: Neolithic, Iron Age, Gallo-Roman period, High Middle Ages and Middle Ages. It bears witness to a continuous and varied human occupation, with traces of daily life, funeral and craft. The remains include a neolithic village of hunting culture, a necropolis of the Iron Age, as well as a artisanal installation dated from the Gallo-Roman era.

The necropolis of the High Middle Ages and medieval elements complete this rich historical panorama, illustrating the evolution of funeral practices and lifestyles in this territory. The site was classified as Historic Monument by decree on November 25, 1987, recognizing its heritage importance. Protected elements such as the remains of the Neolithic village or Gallo-Roman installations are located on Cadastral plots AE 38, 42, 45 to 54 and 66.

Although available sources (Monumentum, internal data) do not specify the details of the excavations or specific discoveries, the location of the site is estimated to be fair (note 5/10). This assessment probably reflects the limitations of current geographic or archaeological data. The site remains a valuable testimony to the cultural and social dynamics that marked this region, from Neolithic to the late Middle Ages.
