Origin and history
The archaeological site of the dolmen of Perignagol I, located in Salles-la-Source in the department of Aveyron, is an emblematic vestige of Neolithic. This megalithic monument, also known as the dolmen of Seveyrac, bears witness to the funeral and architectural practices of the prehistoric societies of the region. It was listed as historic monuments in 1994, highlighting its heritage importance.
The dolmens of Perignagol, of two, are located in a geographical environment marked by precise coordinates (44° 25′ 29′′ N, 2° 27′ 55′′ E for the first). Their presence illustrates the ancient human occupation of this territory, now integrated into the Occitan region. These structures, typical of neolithic funeral architecture, were probably intended to house collective burials.
The inclusion of dolmen 1 in 1994, followed by dolmen 2 in 1997, reflects a gradual recognition of their historical value. Available data from sources such as Wikipedia and Monumentum confirm their status as protected monuments, although some practical information, such as current accessibility, remains partially documented.
In the wider context of Neolithic in Occitania, both dolmens and those of Perignagol bear witness to a complex social organization, where sedentary communities erect lasting monuments to honour their deceased. These structures, often associated with funeral rites, also play a role in structuring the landscape and territories.
The approximate location of the site, indicated by GPS coordinates, as well as its administrative address (12330 Salles-la-Source), allow to situate this heritage in a precise geographical setting. The Insee code of the municipality (12254) and its attachment to the district of Rodez complete this institutional information.
Finally, the alternative mention of Seveyrac dolmen suggests possible toponymic variation or historical confusion, common in the study of ancient archaeological sites. This duality of names could reflect local traditions or changes in the designation of places over the centuries.
