Origin and history
The Dolmen des Roques No. 2, located in Durbans in the Lot, is a megalithic monument dating from the Neolithic period. It is distinguished by an exceptional state of conservation for the Quercy region, with a burial chamber facing the southeast and a partially fragmented covering slab. This site is part of a circular cairn, surrounded by a double crown of vertical slabs, reflecting a complex and evolutionary architecture.
The architectural envelope of the dolmen reveals reshaping, reuse and subsequent condemnation, suggesting prolonged use over several millennia. These features make it a rare example of a preserved neolithic funeral monument, offering valuable clues to ritual practices and construction techniques of the era. The site was listed as a Historical Monument by order of 21 February 2012, thus protecting a major archaeological heritage.
The location of the dolmen, in the Lot department (former Midi-Pyrénées region, today Occitanie), places this monument in a geographical context marked by a dense prehistoric occupation. The megaliths of this region, often linked to funeral or symbolic functions, illustrate the social and spiritual organization of the neolithic communities, for whom these structures served as places of collective memory and worship of the ancestors.
