Origin and history

Fort Bachin is an archaeological site located in the communes of Bouverans and La Rivière-Drugeon in the Doubs department. It collects remains dating from the age of metals and the High Middle Ages, between the 6th and 7th centuries. The site was studied in 1978, revealing a terre surrounded by an outer enclosure, as well as medieval graves installed in a rampart of the Tena period. These graves delivered objects such as a scramasax, a knife, a flint, a Bern-Soleure-type loop plate and a bronze plate.

The remains of Fort Bachin were listed as historic monuments on 8 August 1992. This classification protects a site located in the place called En Groin, on horseback between the two communes. The site is partly private property and communal property, and its exact location is reported in the Merimée base under the cadastral references ZH 63, 85 and 86.

Fort Bachin illustrates the human occupation and funeral practices of the region during the High Middle Ages. The objects discovered, such as weapons and trimmings, bear witness to the cultural exchanges and craft techniques of the time. The site thus offers a light on the transition between late antiquity and the Middle Ages in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
