Origin and history

The Camfroux Cross, located near the so-called "Camfroux" on the commune of Guégon in Morbihan, is an emblematic monument of the sixteenth century. It has been classified as historical monuments since 21 June 1927. This granite cross is distinguished by its typical architecture: a decorative circular barrel, a salient table base, and carved bas-reliefs representing Calvary and the Virgin with the Child. It is associated with an if and indicates the location of an ancient 17th-century chapel, now extinct, dedicated to the Trinity.

The Cross of Camfroux is a cross with a building and painting, characteristic of the Breton religious monuments of this time. It has a sober decor, with a Christ on the cross accompanied by two characters at his feet on one side, and a Virgin with the Child on the other. According to the descriptions, the sculpture is rather frustrating, perhaps reflecting local craftsmanship. The cross is located near the chapel of Camphron, highlighting its role in the religious and cultural landscape of the region.

This monument illustrates the importance of the cross and calvary in 16th century Brittany, where these buildings served as both spiritual and territorial markers. Their presence was often linked to chapels or places of pilgrimage, as is evident from the fact that this cross is a symbol of immortality and sacrality. The protection of this monument in 1927 underscores its historic and heritage value for the commune of Guégon and the Breton region.
