Origin and history

The so-called Vincey mill, located in Portieux in the Vosges department (Great East region), is an industrial building built between the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. This monument illustrates the growth of the textile industry in the Lorraine region, a major economic activity at that time. Its architecture and infrastructure reflect the production techniques of the time, marked by the increasing mechanization and organization of factory work.

Ranked as a Historic Monument, Vincey's spinning saw its facades and roofs protected by a registration order dated 22 October 1991. This status bears witness to its heritage importance, both for its role in local industrial history and for its architectural value. Today, the site belongs to private owners, which limits its accessibility to the public, although its existence continues to mark the urban landscape of Portieux.

At the time of its construction, mills like Vincey were central economic centres, employing a large labour force and structuring the social life of the surrounding municipalities. In the Vosges, the textile industry has developed thanks to the presence of streams, essential for operating machines, and a strong artisanal tradition. These factories have profoundly transformed lifestyles, attracting a working population and promoting urbanisation in rural areas.
