Origin and history
The cross base of Villerouge-Termenès is a medieval monument erected in the 3rd quarter of the 14th century, located in the department of Aude, in the Occitanie region. This carved pedestal, inscribed in historical monuments since 1926, is distinguished by its three coats of arms: that of the center represents the weapons of Pierre de la Jugie, Archbishop of Narbonne (1347-1375) and Lord of Villerouge-Termenès. The other two coats of arms, framing the first, bear a cross adorned with a rock of chess in their heart, symbols linked to the chapter of Saint-Just and the archpried of the Termenès.
The base is located Church Square in Villerouge-Termenès, near the approximate address 1 Rue de la Vinha Comunala. Its official protection, effective by decree of 17 February 1926, emphasizes its heritage importance. The coats of arms evoke ecclesiastical and feudal ties: the cross recalls the dependence of the local church on the chapter of Saint-Just, while the rock of chess symbolizes the status of Villerouge as the capital of the archpried Corbières or the Termenès.
Owned by the commune, this monument illustrates 14th-century heraldic and religious art in Languedoc. Its state of conservation and its precise location (noted 5/10 for reliability) make it a material testimony of the political and religious dynamics of the time, under the authority of the Archbishop of Narbonne. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) confirm its inscription in the heritage without mentioning contemporary uses (visits, events).
