Origin and history

The cross base of Clermont-le-Fort is a 15th century historical monument, located in front of the old gate of the city. It consists of a white marble capital, carved of plant motifs (oak leaves and acorns), which served as a support for an iron cross. This type of ornamentation reflects late Gothic art, common in the region at that time.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 26 December 1928, the base is now owned by the commune. Its exact location, near the historic entrance to Clermont-le-Fort, suggests a symbolic or protective role, typical of medieval urban crosses.
