Origin and history
The salty boreholes of the Roanne Valley, located in Varangéville (Meurthe-et-Moselle), are a historical monument dating from the 1st quarter of the 20th century. This site illustrates the mining and industrial activity associated with salt extraction, a major resource for the Lorraine region at that time. Their location, although documented (9001 Chemin des Garonnes), remains approximate according to available sources, with a cartographic accuracy deemed "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10).
At that time Lorraine was marked by increasing industrialization, where salt farms played a key economic role. Surveys, prospecting or extraction techniques, reflect the methods used to identify and exploit salt deposits. Their classification as Historic Monument underlines their heritage importance, although the protected elements appear to be associated with the neighbouring municipality of Lenoncourt.
No specific information is available on their current accessibility or tourist use.
